How it's calculated

Push: F = P × π × D² ÷ 4 Pull: F = P × π × (D² − d²) ÷ 4 F [kN] = P [bar] × A [mm²] ÷ 10 000

Hydraulic cylinder forces are large: a 100 mm bore at 160 bar pushes about 126 kN (≈12.8 tonnes). The area ratio matters for regeneration circuits and for pressure intensification on the rod side if the rod-end port is blocked.

Pressure intensification: with the rod end blocked, rod-side pressure can reach P × area ratio. Make sure components are rated for it.
