How it's calculated

MTBF = total operating time ÷ number of failures λ = 1 ÷ MTBF

Use operating (run) time, not calendar time, and count only failures that stopped the asset or needed corrective work. Track MTBF on your worst assets month by month: a rising trend is the clearest proof that reliability work is paying off.

With only a few failures MTBF is a rough estimate, so treat small samples with caution.
