V = Q × t × P_atm ÷ (P1 − P2) (Q in free air, P_atm = 1.013 bar)

A receiver can only deliver air while its pressure falls from P1 to P2, so a small pressure band needs a large receiver. It also smooths compressor cycling. A common rule of thumb for load/unload screw compressors is 6–10 litres of receiver per L/s of compressor output.

Pressure vessels need a written scheme of examination and periodic inspection (PSSR 2000 in the UK).
