How it's calculated

Horizontal cylinder: V = L × [r² acos((r − h)/r) − (r − h)√(2rh − h²)] Vertical cylinder: V = π/4 × D² × h Rectangular: V = W × D × h

In a horizontal tank, volume is not proportional to level: the first and last 10% of depth hold much less than the middle. Use this to calibrate a dipstick or level transmitter. For vertical tanks, "length" is the tank height.
