How it's calculated
Lost contribution = hours × units/hour × margin × (1 − recovered %)
Total = lost contribution + idle labour + repair labour + parts
Use contribution (price minus variable cost), not selling price. If you can make up the lost output with overtime, add the overtime premium instead of the full lost margin.
Knowing the cost per hour of downtime on each critical line is the fastest way to justify spares, condition monitoring and training.
