Wrench time = hands-on hours ÷ paid hours × 100
Wrench time is usually measured by work sampling: random observations over a couple of weeks. The rest is spent getting parts, permits and information, travelling and waiting. Improving planning is often the cheapest way to add capacity without hiring.
