d [mm] = 0.127 × 92^((36 − n) ÷ 39) Area = π × d² ÷ 4 (n = AWG number; 1/0 = 0, 2/0 = −1, 3/0 = −2, 4/0 = −3)

AWG sizes are defined by solid-conductor diameter. Every 3 gauges roughly halves the area and every 6 gauges halves the diameter. Metric (IEC) cables use standard mm² sizes that do not line up exactly with AWG, so when replacing, choose a size with at least the same area.

Equivalent area alone does not make a cable suitable. Check current rating, insulation and installation method against the relevant wiring regulations.
